Biennial House Walk

Exploring the diverse architecture of Western Springs.

The House Walk, hosted by the WSHS, is a tribute to our village and its myriad of homes. Not only do our houses tell a story of the village’s past and present, but the event is itself part of the village’s long commitment to preserving its history. During the house walk, selected private homes open their doors to visitors, who often take this chance to gather design and architectural inspiration.

This popular event takes a year of planning and an army of volunteers, sponsors, and advertisers to put together. If you are interested in helping out for our next House Walk in May 2026, please fill out our volunteer application or email us at info@westernspringshistory.org.

The first house walk in Western Springs was held in 1961 to celebrate the Village’s Diamond Jubilee. The Newcomers Club organized a tour of homes, both “old and new” which were built between 1852 and 1960. The next walk was held 22 years later in 1983, when the St. John of the Cross Women’s Club sponsored a six-home tour focusing on Georgian and Victorian homes. The House Walk did not become a reoccurring event until 1990 when the Historical Society began hosting it every other year. With the exception of a short break in the early 200s, and the recent 4-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the walk has been held every other year.

The proceeds from the House Walk help support the Tower Museum, WSHS Archives, Ekdahl House Museum and programs such as the District 101 second grade historical walking tour. The WSHS does not receive any funding from the village, making fundraisers like the House Walk vital to helping the Society keep Western Springs’ history alive and recorded for current and future generations.
